Effects of Alcoholism in Male Infertility

from:

Alcoholism poses danger to fertility both in the male and the female. The question however is how much alcohol ingestion is too much to threaten fertility and what damage to fertility will alcoholism cause?

Recent studies show that drinking an equivalent of four ounces of absolute alcohol everyday will start creating damage to the reproductive system. A bottle of beer for example contains about half an ounce of alcohol, so does a glass of wine. Alcohol concentration, we all know will depend largely on the kind of drink that is ingested. With beer as the benchmark, eight bottles of beer a day will just place a person on the red line of endangering his reproductive capability.

Male fertility and alcohol

The direct result of alcoholism for male is; it raises the estrogen level, which in turn interferes with the hormones and sperm development. This is so because alcohol is a toxin that tends to kill sperm generating cells of male. Chronic alcoholism also results to atrophy in the testicles, gynecomastia and the lack of sexual interest.

Other negative effects of alcoholism to male fertility

§ Disorder in the gonads – this will usually include changes in the structure of the testicles and decline in the T serum level. A decrease in the T serum level is suspected to cause feminization phenotype and hypogonadism.

§ Sperm density per milliliter is also reduced including development of abnormalities in sperm size and shape, the development of the sperm tail is also affected and so is the sperm motility.

§ Impotence aside from damage that could be caused to the liver.

Typically, a healthy sperm cell has a regular oval head and a straight tail. Alcoholism creates alteration in the sperm shape that seriously compromises the viability of the spermatozoa. Chronic alcoholism damages the sperm morphology that often has irreversible effects.

Sperm density or the sperm count that is measured for every milliliter of ejaculate is also decreased mainly caused by the toxicity of alcohol to the sperm producing cells in the body. Typically the volume of a single ejaculate is 3 milliliters (sometimes reaching six milliliter per ejaculate) with 120 million sperm cells per ml.

Whenever in doubt whether the male fertility is at risk a semen analysis has to be done. Sperm will take about three months to develop. A person who wants his sperm analyzed will then have to abstain from sexual activity during this period to get a clearer and more reliable reading regarding the health and the condition of the sperm that is produced.

Semen analysis does not always have to be consulted with a Urologist and conducted in the laboratory by a technician. Today, a semen analysis test kit is available that could be done within the confines and privacy of the home. This is a good starting point to get a good information about the health of the sperm and its viability. Depending on the findings, anything that is more serious should be done in a fertility clinic for man.

As previously mentioned, alcoholism takes a great toll on the reproductive health of mothers too. Some of the causes vary from ovarian dysfunction, amenorrhea, anovulation, luteal phase defect, hyperprolactinemia etc.

This is why drinking habits has to be observed especially when the reproductive health is one of the topmost concerns.
