Keeping Male Fertility Up

from:

Previously, failure of a couple to conceive after a while is usually accounted for the mother’s infertility. Today, studies prove that males have biological clocks too. Just like the female, males’ fertility decline with age. As the male grows older, their sperm production gets fewer aside from the sperm getting more sluggish.

The study however was conducted on a small number of volunteers. For better confirmation, it has to be conducted to involve a larger sampling of men, the result however was consistent to confirm an age old suspicion that male fertility decreases as he ages. The inability of a couple to have children is not only dependent on the conditions of the female but is split between them as the inability to produce offspring is shared by the male 50% of the time.

Male fertility starts to decline starting at age 22. Sperm motility and volume decreases every year after that age. Having said that, males are pretty well taken cared of in the productivity department. Even with the gradual yearly decline, an average healthy male could produce 400 billion sperm in his lifetime releasing more than 60 million sperm with every ejaculation. Every ejaculate has the sperm swimming in seminal fluids for an average total volume of about 3 milliliters with every ejaculation although this may again be dependent on the sexual activity and the health of the male.

There are several factors that would greatly affect male fertility. If you want to enhance the health of sperm here are the following suggestions:

Smoking – smoking may have been too demonized as contributory in causing most illnesses, it is a big wonder why it is not totally banned if all the claims were true but that is another story. In reproductive health though, studies show that smoking contributes to low sperm count aside from being weak. Miscarriages are increased to 64% when either of the couple smokes.

Marijuana – marijuana results not only to sluggish motility and low sperm count but also to abnormal patterns in the sperm development.

Alcohol – alcohol abuse destroys the male reproductive plumbing system. Chronic alcohol consumption also reduces a male’s ability to produce healthy sperm cells.

Exercise – Exercising is good but too much of it will build up heat around the testicles that are nor conducive to producing healthy sperm cells.

Keeping it cool – Avoid hot baths, hot tubs, saunas, hot workplaces, tight fitting jogging pants and underwear and anything that will subject the scrotum area hot.

The C factor – when the body does not receive the sufficient amount of vitamin C there is the tendency in the sperm to clump together. Low vitamin C intake alone renders 16% of all males infertile.

Antibiotics – there are antibiotic groups that effect sperm quality and quantity like the erythromycin and the nitrofurazone or nitrofurantoin. The effects though are temporary. Still it will be wise to check out the antibiotics that you are taking.

Abstain – Abstention from sexual activity will help the potency of your sperm but only for a limited period of time (about three to six days) because a brief restraint from sexual activity will increase the volume of sperm cells. It is not true that a prolonged abstinence will increase male fertility. On the contrary, long sexual abstinence will only result to your ejaculate containing a high volume of older sperm cells that have decreased motility.

Steer away from exposure to lead and other environmental hazards. Examples of elements that may be harmful to male fertility are heavy metals, insecticides and pesticides, ionizing radiation, organic solvents, and chemicals with high toxicity.
