What Causes Male Fertility Problems

from:

For a long while it was thought that failure of a couple to produce children is due to the woman’s infertility. Recent studies show the contrary.

When a couple has been working on at having children and has failed for at least one year of regular unprotected sex, both the man and the woman has to undergo a series of fertility tests. Infertility is not a woman’s problem alone.

About 40% of the time, the failure of a couple to produce children is caused by male infertility problems.

The following are some of the reasons why male fertility is compromised.

§ Injury to the testicles – could happen during sports, fights and strenuous activities. A blow to the testicles could cause it to swell and damage the veins that supply blood to it. Twisting of the testicles could damage its cord and will inure the sperm production mechanism. This could however be corrected with surgery. The scrotum sack and the testicles however has to be treated with special attention as even a minor trauma, hernia repair, groin surgery and prolonged exposure to heat could potentially cause male infertility problems.

§ Viral infections could cause orchitis. Orchitis is a condition where there is a painful swelling of the testicles. This could result to failure in producing healthy sperm cells.

§ Genetic disorders. The most common example of a chromosome disorder is the Klinefelter's syndrome where instead of having the normal 46 XY chromosomes, there is and additional X-chromosome that translates into 47 XXY. This disorder disrupts cell division affecting the production of the sperm.

§ Congenital problems. Some infants are born without a vas deferens. The vas deferens is the tubes that carry the semen through the and out of it.

§ Obstructive infertility. Sometimes, blockages in the tubes that carry the sperm could happen. This is rare though. Another example of infertility caused by blockages is the Berry-Perkins-Young Syndrome.

§ Sperm disorders. Low sperm count (density per milliliter), low motility (the ability of the sperm to move and swim in the seminal fluid), the size and the shape of the sperm are all considered in a semen analysis. Biochemical and structural analysis of the individual sperm are also examined using modern techniques.

§ Varicocele is the development of varicose veins around the testicles and the vas deferens. The development of these veins could increase the temperature around the testicles that will result to lowered sperm density. Retrocele is retrograde ejaculation where the ejaculate goes into the bladder. This defect could be corrected with surgery. Hydrocele is the presence of too much fluid in the testicles.

§ Around 5% of couples have problems with sex like erectile dysfunction, premature ejaculation, failure to ejaculate, inability to penetrate the vagina for other reasons and are the main cause of infertility among couples.

§ Illness and diseases like high fever, influenza, pneumonia, diabetes, high blood pressure, coronary heart diseases, kidney problems, cancers that affect the endocrine glands, sexually transmitted diseases, spinal injuries etc, could also cause male infertility problems.

§ Substance abuse, tobacco, alcoholism, could cause decreased sperm production if not abnormal sperm cells. Even some forms and groupings of prescribed drugs could cause infertility problems.

If your fertility is on the decline, or if fertility is a concern to you, it may be wise to consult a physician immediately. Majority of problems with infertility is curable.
