Potential Risks of In Vitro Fertilization

from:

The product of a 25-year old technology is now a subject of controversies among parents and experts alike. IVF has produced millions of babies, yes! And lots of happy parents. However, in vitro fertilization and other assisted reproduction technologies paved way for the emergence of rare abnormalities into picture.

Only recently, there had been conducted studies, which aimed to search for the links of in vitro fertilization and similar procedures to the increase of cases of rare medical conditions.

In one case, these studies have provided evidences that such methods have increased a child's susceptibility over developing Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome. The enlargement of the body organs characterizes this syndrome, especially the enlarging of tongues in children. Another case in point is the rise into the scene of Angelman syndrome, a child's disease distinguished as displays of mental retardation symptoms and speech impairment.

These findings lead researchers to conclude that there are a number of abnormalities that may be attributed with in vitro fertilization treatment and all other assisted reproduction methods.

In addition to these, children conceived by means of in vitro are likely to be born lighter than a child of normal weight. They are also found to have increased susceptibleness towards developing a condition known as retinoblastoma, a very rare case of eye cancer.

All these findings have signaled unease on the use of such methods. Nonetheless, the studies still provide insufficient information and are still on a tentative stage. Add to it the fact that all assertions are pertaining to slight cases and aren't still prominent to set the stage for public alarm. Disorders that were stated in here are typically uncommon. For example, only 1 out 15,000 births does the Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome occurs. Retinoblastoma on the other hand, affects only a child in every 17,000 births.

These risks though are not enough to assert that families must keep watch for the use of IVF treatment and other methods. It still remains to be a blessing to be able to conceive and give birth to a child, given that the couples are infertile. Yet, the medical community is largely concerned of the actions that in vitro fertilization industry may take to be able to control such incidences. Or at most, lessen the possibilities of the occurrence of the event.

There are varying reasons why such risks emerge from a very advanced technology. The main core of which is the culture of egg and sperm cells under a laboratory facility. There are a number of studies that came up with evidences that there are considerable differences between a clinically fertilized embryo from the embryo that was fertilized naturally inside a mother's uterus. These alterations may be due to small differences in the amino acids and salts that constitute certain genes. As we know, genes are very sensitive components of a human body. And tiny modifications may lead to relative changes in the gene's behavior. For concrete evidences of such conditions, we have Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome and Angelman syndrome as points of comparison.

According to research, these are in themselves, products of errors in imprinting the genes of a child.

These risks may be irreversible for now. But do these attest to the truth that man is already attempting to play God? And has he been altering the way nature conducts itself with every assisted fertilization it performs?
