Because the risk of not realizing a child inside the mother's womb is high, specialists implant around 2 to 4 embryos each time into the uterus to help secure higher rate of producing an infant. This attempt is properly termed as a cycle.
The process of in vitro fertilization normally begins when a woman takes drugs or injections that contain hormones. These stimulate the ovaries to grow several egg cells in preparation for their removal. As the eggs become ready for removal, the surgeon will continue the process by inserting a needle via the vagina into the ovary to reach the egg cells. This technique is much easier and less invasive with IVF method rather than with laparoscopic surgery.
This needle technique is often not painful so patients are not usually given general anesthesia. However, surgeons may chose to allow them to some sedating medications.
The presence of egg cells will then be determined by examining the fluid that was removed from the ovary.
For the time being, the male partner is asked of semen sample. The sperms are separated from the semen. The process will then continue by combining the active sperm cell with the healthy egg cell. The term in vitro fertilization rooted from the laboratory dish, which is made of glass. In vitro, in itself is Latin word for "in glass", thus the terminology.
After bringing together the sperm and the egg cell, they will be observed and incubated within 2-3 days to ready them for the last stage of the method. If they were identified to be healthy enough, they will then be transferred into the woman's womb through the cervix via a catheter. The woman will then continue the process.
For two weeks or so, the woman is given specific hormones. The positive result of the implantation will only work if the fertilized eggs will attach themselves onto the uterine wall and mature.
