IVF Procedure: What Makes up the Procedure?
from:IVF procedure is now a popular term for clinically conceiving a child. However, during in its earliest years, it is subject to serious controversial issues and mysteries that too few realized that it will be socially acceptable. Add to it the fact that the very first results of in vitro fertilization are called as "test tube babies", though the term wasn't meant to be literal. Yet among the laymen, the terminology itself brings a couple of ethical arguments for which many of them are still unresolved until today.
The very first baby produced by means of in vitro procedure is Louise Brown, an English who lived well up to her 25th year. Afterwhich, some 200 000 or more babies followed.
Very much unlike with many other artificial reproduction techniques, IVF procedure works by combining an egg cell and a sperm cell in a laboratory dish. Thus, the phrase "in vitro fertilization". If embryos form after careful analysis and observation, they will then be implanted to the female parent wherein the natural process of conception will occur in the uterus. The complete course happens in a complex process, which gives reason to the high price that the procedure commands. For the most part, IVF procedure demands $8, 000 or more for each session. The sole reason why only 5% of all infertile American couples seek the intervention of the procedure but only after all possible options worked in vain.
The initial step in IVF procedure is the injection of hormones or by taking drugs that contain hormones to incite the production of multiple egg cells instead of only one. Afterwhich, the woman will undergo an examination to determine the readiness of the eggs. In this stage, timing is crucial. The egg cells must be taken the time before they emerge from the follicles. If they are not retrieved in proper time, if too early or too late, the possibility that they will not develop normally is high. This is resolved by taking blood samples from the female host prior to the egg cell retrieval. To further assure the success of this stage, the IVF facility will require you to follow strictly some guidelines.
On the day of egg cell retrieval, you will be given a general anesthesia or some forms of sedatives.
While in the process of taking out the egg cells, the male host will be asked to excrete semen, from which the sperm cells will be taken. The woman on the other hand, will undergo a 3o-minute IVF procedure (but may as well consume an hour) wherein her eggs will be taken. Afterwhich both will be combined on a laboratory dish.
During the process which may take some 18 to 24 hours of more, the combined egg and sperm cells will be observed and incubated. If the IVF facility determines the high probability of success, the fertilized eggs will be transferred into the female's uterus.
The transferring of fertilized egg will require an easier procedure. To increase the success rate, the doctor will implant two or more of these embryos in a single placement. However, this implies multiple pregnancy, which may become an unwanted health risk both for your baby and you.
You would have to stay for some four to six hours in the hospital room following the IVF procedure. After two weeks of steady hormone intake, you will be tested for pregnancy.
