A Step-by-Step Guide to Process of IVF Egg Retrieval

from:

Probably the most essential part of any in vitro fertilization is the egg retrieval. Without this, there could have been no process at all.

In vitro fertilization egg retrieval is the removal of the egg cells from the ovaries. IVF works by inducing the production of multiple egg cells by means of hormone injections or drugs that the woman take prior to the egg retrieval method. The women's ovaries can only produce one egg at a time in normal circumstances. But with the intervention of hormone injections dramatic increase in the rate of production of the ovary resorts to multiple eggs, which on normal condition is impossible.

IVF egg retrieval operation is typically done under general anesthesia. However, there are doctors who advise only the use of sedatives. With general anesthesia, women normally have to refrain from any food or drinks the night prior to the operation. Fasting is continued until the morning on the day of the operation. Before the egg retrieval operation also, she will have to take intravenous saline drop, which is useful when she has to receive medications that will aid her sleep the whole process through.

The process begins by the insertion of a needle into the vagina reaching the ovary. This is guided by means of vaginal ultrasound probe until it reaches the follicle wherein the egg resides. The timing here is important. Normally, before this needle method starts, the doctor has to evaluate and determine if the egg cells are matured enough to be retrieved. This can be best facilitated by means of blood samples and other mediums.

The eggs ready for retrieval themselves are not visible under ultrasound. So the fluid is taken from the follicle and transferred to a test tube, which in turn will be inspected to retrieve the egg cells. The presence of egg cells varies from one woman to another as well as the size and health of the eggs.

An ideal IVF egg produces around 10 to 20 egg cells, which account for around 15 minutes or so of procedure. Afterwhich, the woman is taken to the recovery room. While this process occurs, the male participant is asked to produce a semen collection. This would be the source of the sperm cells.

After four hours, the sperm cells will be merged with the egg cell. Hours after this process, the eggs will be checked for improvements. If great evidences of fertilization are found, the eggs will be readied for transference. This period will vary from facility to another. So there are IVF facilities that will take four or more days to mature the eggs while there are those that need only two to three days to complete the process.

On normal circumstances, the couple can leave an hour or two after the procedure. But before they leave, they will be informed of the results of the method. Afterwards, they will have to wait for days to know if the fertilization of the eggs is realized.

The embryos will then be incubated for a couple of days.

Finally, the day of announcement will come. This means that a return in the hospital is needed to continue the implantation process. The eggs will then be transferred into the uterus of the female to help incite the natural method of conceiving an offspring.
