What is Semen Analysis

from:

Usually, males doesn’t think so much of their semen except maybe at times when doing the act or when they realize that they needed it most. But the male semen is a work of wonder by itself. Its activity when examined through a microscope is like looking at a big and complicated community teeming with life, movement and competition.

Imagine for example that the millions of sperm cells in one ejaculate will try to overcome overwhelming odds to travel to and connect with just one egg cell, just one, and more often than not, everyone of them fails. Your next ejaculate will do the same. Swim (as aggressively as they can) straight and true to meet that one objective and maybe create and leave the world an imprint of approximately another you.

For all the trouble that each sperm cell has to undergo, the current lifestyle of the average American has decreased the sperm count in the last 50 years or so. Where it used to be 120 million sperm count per milliliter, it has already dropped today to about more than 20 million per milliliter of sperm in semen. That is just about hitting the red line. Going below that will already be what is normally termed in the medical circles as low sperm count.

The strength of men’s sperm cells is usually a sign of the health of a male. When the body is healthy the sperms are too. If there are doubts as to your health as a male and your capacity to produce an offspring, a semen analysis will be a good way for you to take. It is also a better way for you to understand the health of your sperm.

What are the components of semen?
On the average, a healthy male will have over 120 million of sperm cells in one ejaculate. It will be swimming in water that contains simple sugars to fuel the sperm. Aside from that it will also have alkalis to protect the sperm from acids present in the urethra and the vagina and other elements like vitamin C, cholesterol, zinc, and prostaglandins. Prostaglandins are thought to aid the passage of the sperm into the womb.

Analyzing the semen

When you submit yourself to semen analysis, your semen will literally be examined under a microscope. You will have to produce a sample any best way you know how and bring this to laboratory analysis within one hour, less than one hour is better. Remember though that if you do not want to produce the semen sample manually, a machine will be there to help you. Now if you do not relish a machine, you will have to bring your partner where a special condom will be provided for you. More often than not, you will be asked to carry the sample under the armpit to keep the temperature in the ideal level. When you have successfully done that, a complete semen analysis will include the following:

§ The volume of the semen – normally it will be anywhere from two to six milliliters.

§ The sperm density – this covers the amount of sperm in a certain volume. Sperm density is also called sperm count per milliliter or sperm concentration.

§ Morphology of the semen – considers that size and shape of the sperm.

§ Motility – sperm motility talks about the percentage of active sperms in the semen. It also considers the direction and manner in which the sperm swim.

§ The seminal fluid – analysis the quality of the fluid in which the sperm is swimming and the ability of the sperms ability to move and survive through the cervical mucus. It also analysis the ability of the sperm to penetrate the egg.
