The other half of the issue of fertility (although not commonly given the importance usually allowed to females) is the man.



Anyone can notice it everywhere. Advertisement slogans of food supplement and milk companies will often campaign for more folic acid for expecting mothers and mothers to be but never for the father.



And yet adequate folic acid will both be beneficial to the mother as well as the father who, as already mentioned is responsible for the fertility that allows conception 50% of the time.



Remember that when talking about fertility, what is good for the mother is good for the father as well. This is not like the sauce for the goose and the gander issue but basically, the very substances and elements that stimulate ovulation in the mother are also those that stimulate sperm production of the father. This is very true and is the basic precept of fertility medication. This is also true with folic acid absorption.



Recent studies conducted in infertile males show that among other things, there is a low level in folic acid in males that have low sperm counts. Low folic acid has also been observed in males having low sperm motility. Now we all know that sperm motility and sperm count are two of the greatest factors that has to be overcome by males suffering from infertility disorders. If low sperm count will be overcome and sperm motility is improved, there will be a very excellent chance of having genetic offspring even when the male is impotent. This is why if doctors urge expectant mother mothers to take in as much folic acid as required fathers too have to enter into the loop. Now let marketing companies take their clue.



Let me mention however that there are less expensive ways of getting your folic acid. Leafy green vegetables, fortified breakfast cereals, orange juices, legumes, they can give you a good dietary source of the folic acid you need.



Aside from a direct correlation of having low levels of folic acid in low sperm density and low sperm motility, there exist also a very strong suspicion among researchers in fertility issues that sufficient folate levels will attribute to good synthesis and the repair of the DNA of the sperm. Good folate levels are also very relevant at reducing the risk of chromosome breaks.



Reducing the risks at chromosome breaks will subsequently result in cutting the risk of cancer in their progeny.



While it is true that there are many factors and variables that could affect male fertility, like smoking, too much alcohol consumption, strenuous activities, stress, genetics, accidents, physiological and psychological issues the diet of the male will play a very important factor in his fertility. Not only will his general health be improved but the health of his sperm cells as well.



It is then time to look not only on the health of the mother but also on the other half of the fertility issue, the father. If product marketers and endorsers have found another segment that is a ripe marketing audience, let nutritionists pay attention as well. The public has yet to see a nutritional campaign that focuses on diet and its role in reproductive health. With the average American fertility on the decline, this could be a good time to advance better nutrition that includes improved folic acid consumption.
