Pesticides Affecting Male Fertility

from:

The inability of a couple to conceive within a period of one year is termed infertility. If this condition prevails for the succeeding years, the couple may then be diagnosed of sterility. Whereas, given that the couple uses no preventive measures and still cannot produce a single pregnancy.

There is no hope in sterility but to seek medical and surgical intervention. In most cases of infertility however, couples turn to extensive assisted reproductive treatments and technologies that can help them resolve their inability to conceive. A number of which involve fertilization of the egg and the sperm cells outside the woman’s body.

Infertility is a condition by which there are three major contributing factors. In a sense, infertility is a three-part problem wherein the three components play crucial roles in identifying who really causes infertility. According to recent studies, One-third of the cause is shared by the female participant. The other 1/3 is partly taken by the male factors and the last part is equally shared by the two. Having said that, we may arrive to two conclusions.

One, in order for us to identify the main cause of infertility we must resolve first which among the three factors stands nearest to being the main cause. Afterwhich, diagnosis is possible. If so, then treatment can be the last recourse. However, underlying factors must also be considered for the initial evaluation.

If the female covers all the problems, then one reason that we may arrive to is her blocked fallopian tubes. If the male posses the problem, then he may have insufficient sperm count, or show symptoms of erectile dysfunction, and other chronic diseases. However, all these do not say it all. In fact there is a number of unexplained infertility wherein there are no biological traces to the root cause.

For couples who were diagnosed of presenting shared infertility, it is best to evaluate all the issues that both members present. Then the care provider will do the treatment for all underlying causes for both. What causes infertility for each of the participants? Who shares the larger part? And what can be done to resolve each participant’s presented problems? These must be the initial questions that the medical group may delve into.

But again, it is always possible that the care provider won’t be able to find traces that may lead to infertility.

Unexplained infertility is different from infertility caused by environmental factors though. Say for example, overexposure to pesticides that may cause some unwanted biological effects on the sperm composition. It is not clear though how pesticides and male infertility connects. But if we are to take a closer look at it, the connection may be discovered on the unnecessary reaction of the immune system to the penetration of pesticides in the male’s body.

Once pesticide elements enter the body, the immune system will take the sperms mistakenly as foreign viruses. Thus, the immune system will target and treat the sperm cells. As a result, the sperm cells will get damaged.

On the other hand, proven studies assert that serious exposure to environmental hazards and toxins like lead, mercury, radiation, heavy metals, radioactive substances and pesticides has considerable effects to the fertility of the male. Depending on the extremity of exposure, the male may have long-term or short-term infertility.

Because there exists no profound explanations on how pesticide affects male fertility, it is best to seek medical information from people who are established authorities in the field.
